The principle of distinction in contemporary non-international armed conflict: Syria, a case study
Main Article Content
Abstract
Non-international armed conflicts have, since the middle of the last century, largely replaced international armed conflicts. A striking feature of these conflicts is the large number of deaths among the civilian population, the target of deliberate attacks by the conflicting parties. In light of this reality, this paper aims to analyze, in the light of international humanitarian law, the applicability of the principle of distinction in the ongoing conflict in Syria and to conclude on its legal consequences, given its current relevance.
