Abstract

The use of polymer based composites reinforced with natural fibers has assumed an important role in the field of materials engineering. Low cost and biodegradability, combined with reduced specific mass, are key factors to making its use advantageous, despite some unwanted properties the fiber provides, such as hygroscopy and low adhesion between phases. The purpose of this work is to study the use of sisal fibers as reinforcement of polycarbonate for military use, especially in ballistic protection. To prepare the material, the polycarbonate was placed in a knife mill together with the sisal fibers. That was done in order to make proof bodies of traction, Izod impact and flexion. Subsequently, the DSC 404 F1 Pegasus was used to perform the analysis of the thermoplastics used, with the purpose of graphically obtaining the glass transition temperature, crystallinity and melting temperature of each.
