Abstract

The objective of this work was the production of the silicon carbide (SiC)/graphene oxide (GO) composite. A modified Hummers method was carried out to synthesize GO. SiC and SiC/GO samples were sintered by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). Besides, other SiC and SiC/GO samples were sintered in presence of liquid phase by adding alumina (Al2O3) and yttria (Y2O3). GO was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy. Final composite samples were evaluated in terms of density, hardness and fracture surface analysis. It was observed that the densification increased with the presence of additives and remained approximately constant by the addition of GO, whereas the hardness decreased with the addition of GO, which is indicative of toughness increasing
