Abstract

It is known that thorium is a fertile element that has the ability to convert to uranium-233, a potent fissile material. Besides being an alternative nuclear fuel to those used today, this element shows promise in solving the world energy crisis and presents advantages as an option for the non-proliferation movement,
among others. Therefore, the main remaining elements of burnup were analyzed for the core configuration of a PWR nuclear reactor based on the ANGRA II reactor, in its current configuration using only UO2, and in a different oxide supply configuration uranium and thorium mixture in various concentrations, allowing a preliminary assessment of the resulting production of uranium-233 and the appearance of poisons resulting from burning. The study was carried out using the SCALE code and especially its ORIGEN-ARP
module, which analyzes the depletion of the elements present in a reactor.
