Model-Driven Engineering Applied to Radio Cognition in Military Operations

Abstract

The dynamic nature of the military communications environment makes cognitive radio a promising alternative due to its versatility in sensing the environment and changing its operation mode autonomously. These changes must be grounded in military doctrine and telecommunications standards, which may vary from different military scenarios. In war situations, quick reaction and adaptation to new rules and conditions are desirable to avoid or prevent fratricide. This research applies Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) techniques to achieve fast adaptation, by using Domain-Specific Languages (DSL) and source code model transformations applied to cognitive radios in military operations. In a study case, these concepts were applied, speeding up the update of rules and employing a sliding windows strategy.
