Abstract

In this paper the problem of bearing-only target localization is investigated for the case where observer positions are assumed known, exactly or subject to positioning errors. The performances of electromagnetic emitter location algorithms are compared in a few given specific naval tactical scenarios. In order to estimate the target position, only angle of arrival measurements, or bearings, of the transmitted signal from the target to the observers, are used. It is assumed that not only bearing measurements are
corrupted by noise but also that the exact position of the observer may not be known, with positioning errors being modeled as additive white noise. The simulations, with the purpose of estimating the position of a fixed target at sea, are carried out using algorithms Least Squares (LS), Total Least Squares (TLS), Generalized Hough Transform (GHT), Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) and Minimax. Angle of arrival measurements are assumedly obtained by manned or unmanned aircrafts on patrol missions. Additionally, this paper presents a geometric interpretation for some of the algorithms
