Abstract

Within a radiotherapy room, in addition to the primary beam, there is also secondary radiation due to the leakage of the accelerator head and the scattering caused by room objects, patient’s body and even the shield room itself, which is sized to protect the external individuals disregarding its effects on the patient. This work studied the effect of concrete shield over the patient considering its contribution in equivalent doses in organs, effective dose in patients and secondary cancer development risk factors acordiing to BEIR VII report. Modeling in MCNPX code, linear accelerator Varian 2100 C/D operating at 18MV, MAX phantom representing the patient and radiotherapy room with and without shielding (walls, floor and ceiling) were used to calculate equivalent and effective doses and risk factors. The difference of the obtained values allowed us to evaluate the effects of shielding on the patient. The modeling used the accelerator operating in
four fields (0°, 90°, 180° and 270°), simulating INCA’s treatment protocol for prostate cancer. Results indicate that the concrete has an average contribution of 20% in equivalent dose deposited in the organs, 4.65% in the individual effective dose and 26.81% in the patient’s risk of developing radiation-induced secondary cancer
