Abstract

This work presents a numerical-analytical solution for the transient conduction heat transfer with a variable source term in fuel rods of nuclear reactors. The thermal problem in the cladding was examined through the lumped system analysis. The Integral Transform Technique was used to solve analytically the model here
developed and the resulting ordinary differential equations system was evaluated numerically. In nuclear accidents, the required period for the cladding melting is a parameter of great interest, which is called critical time. The results showed that the cladding material do not have major thermal influence in the fuel rods heat
transfer. Furthermore, critical time variations due to changes into Biot number was examined and it was concluded that the Biot number plays an important role in order to increase the necessary time for the cladding material melting
