Abstract

This research aims to analyze the feasibility of employing the AV-TM 300 Tactical Cruise Missile (TCM) by Missile and Rocket Battery (MR Bty) in Urban Area Operations, raising possibilities and limitations of the new weaponry as well as the necessary adaptations to be adopted for the employment of such Missile in this kind of operation. The growth of the urban population and the development of large hubs have increasingly attracted the current conflicts to the humanized environment. Concerns about the Human Dimension and civilian rights gain prominence in the plans of the commanders at all levels. Within this scope and inserted in its transformation process, the Brazilian Army has sought to acquire new capabilities through its strategic programs. One of the proposals of the ASTROS 2020 Program is to equip the Brazilian Army with the TCM, which will allow the engagement of strategic targets up to 300 km with high precision. The study aimed to verify the procedures to be adopted since the mapping of targets, getting the mission, procedure of reconnaissance, selection and occupation of position (RSOP) execution of the shot and damage control, focusing on verifying the suitability of using the TCM for use in built environment. To achieve the proposed objectives, a bibliographic research was initially carried out, investigating the doctrinal foundations of the Missile Artillery, the possibilities and limitations of the TCM, international humanitarian law considerations, as well as the use of missiles in urban areas in the current conflicts. Complementing the literature review, questionnaires and interviews were aimed at military experts on the missile and rocket system, in order to collect experiences and opinions on the subject. At the conclusion, proposals were presented for the adequacy of the use of TCM by MR Bty to support fire in urban areas according to what prescribes the current military doctrine of the Brazilian Army.
