Information War
understanding the concept from a systematic review from 2010 to 2020
Abstract
War is a subject that has always occupied humankind. We have reached the 20th century with the potential to provoke our self-extermination. Nowadays, information war has been gaining prominence due to the changes that emerged from the Information Age and from Knowledge Age. The objective of this study was to review the scientific literature (RSL) on the subject in order to achieve a precise understanding of its concept. Another aim is to understand the state of the art about the information war phenomenon, in addition to examining its approach and understanding by the scientific psychology. This study is justified by the need of adequate use of this term in scientific research considering the diversity of meanings that is commonly attributed to it. An RSL methodology was applied, which was based on scientific articles published between 2010 and 2020, with consultation to the CAPES Periodicals, SciELO, and Pepsic databases. We verified different approaches to the phenomenon that could be put into three groups: one group that approaches information operations; another group that approaches information warfare in the context of a military confrontation; and, finally, a group that approaches information war in the psychosocial context, without the necessary existence of military objectives. It was concluded that the term information war refers to a special kind of war, whose purpose is to persuade the minds and hearts of a group in order to achieve, in the long run, previously established objectives.
