Validation of the Psychological Hardiness Scale in the Training of Brazilian Army Combat Officers

The military profession is frequently regarded as inherently stressful due to its daily demands and exposure to extreme situations, such as armed conflicts, which involve life-threatening risks. During the training of Army officers, these challenges are also present, requiring cadets to be prepared to confront them effectively. This study investigated the role of Psychological Hardiness among cadets at the Agulhas Negras Military Academy (AMAN) and validated a Spanish instrument for its assessment. The literature highlights this construct as essential to both performance and health in military contexts; however, few studies have been conducted in Brazil, particularly within the armed forces. The Psychological Hardiness Questionnaire (QRP) was administered to 1,147 cadets and the data were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS software (version 19). The results confirmed the three-factor structure of Psychological Hardiness—Challenge, Control, and Commitment. A strong correlation among these variables was observed (KMO = 0.852; Bartlett’s test, p < 0.001), leading to the exclusion of items 03 and 14 and enabling the validation of the instrument. It is concluded that the PHQ is suitable for research within AMAN and may contribute to future studies on the impact of Psychological Hardiness on cadet training and performance.
