The purchase of military equipment and use of Force in South America: political and historical aspects

Abstract
The paper aims to establish whether there is an arms race in South America or not. To this end, it analyzes the characteristics of international arms trade, and then examines the history of South American transactions. It also describes the use and threat of use of force that the region's governments have made throughout its history, as well as both total expenditures and the percentage of the GDP spent on defense. Finally, considering that, despite the historic rivalry and threat of use of force, data on military spending does not indicate that there is an arms race in the region.
