The article aims to analyze the organizational patterns and the most frequent lexical choices of abstracts, abstracts of scientific articles in English, aviation area. This work analyzes both the rhetoric of "movements" (free translation from English moves) by Swales (1990), as well as the most frequent lexical choices. For this, two corpora were collected, one with abstracts of scientific articles published in the journal Air and Space Power Journal and another with abstracts of Course Completion Papers written by Air Force Academy aviator cadets. First, the mandatory and optional movements were checked. Subsequently, the most frequent lexical choices were observed based on Systemic-Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1994; Halliday & Matthissen, 2004, 2014), seeking comparisons between abstracts written by experienced researchers and those written by cadets (researchers in training). The results reveal patterns of movements that differ from each other in the two corpora studied, as well as a considerable difference with regard to lexical choices. The conclusions point to the most significant differences between texts, such as variations of movements and the use of more complex lexical choices in the corpus of experienced researchers. It is expected that the results of this work contribute to the design of teaching materials for the teaching of reading and academic writing at the institution.
