Abstract

The Portuguese Army has experienced a difficult regeneration of human resources, particularly in the category of enlisted men. With the purpose of studying the reasons that interfere in this target population, the present article aims at analyzing the profiles of young men incorporated, through the application of a questionnaire at the moment of admission to the Common General Training Course for Army Private. The results allowed us to identify four groups of young volunteers for military service through the intersection between area of residence, educational background, reasons for joining and perceptions about the institution. The data obtained revealed that during the recruitment phase, the promotion of military service should enhance the diffusion of the values and incentives it provides.
